Axel Axgil
Born 1915.

Danish gay activist.

Original founder of the Danish lesbian and gay organisation, the LBL, in 1948. Also involved with RFSL, DNF-48, and "e;IHWO"e;. This led to the founding of national lesbian and gay organisations in Sweden in 1949 and in Norway in 1950.

In October, 1989, Denmark became the first country in the world to give legal recognition of same-sex relationships. Eigil and Axel Axgil were the first couple to register and were married in theBryllupsalon, or "e;wedding chamber"e; in Copenhagen's town hall. They had lived together for 39 years. In 1958 they had adopted the nameAxgilwhich is a combination of parts of Eigil and Axel.
