Photographer Alex McKenna and business accountant Chris Graham-Bell were founding partners in Incognito Publishing, which was later to become Millivres Ltd. In October 1974 they launched the largely soft-porn magazine for gay men, Him Exclusive, edited by Alan Purnell.

He bought the title and from 1976 to 1982 and published the magazine under the title Him Monthly. In October 1982 it was sold back to Millivres under the editorship of Roger Kean.

Meanwhile Gay News was coming to an end and its editor, Denis Lemon, moved to Millivres to edit the short-lived Gay Reporter which was intended as a supplement to Him Monthly.

John Marshall and Peter Burton, who had worked on Gay News became joint editors of Him Monthly. The supplement Gay Reporter was merged with the main magazine to form Him-Gay Reporter. In May 1984 the title Gay Times was added. Within months this became the main, and then only title, until August 1985 when Incorporating Gay News was added, after the Gay News estate had been sold to Millivres.

Him was relaunched in 1986 as a new magazine under the editorship of Bryan Derbyshire. Dafydd Jenkins was an assistant editor of Him in the late 1980s.

Gay Times first became available in the high street stores, airports and newsagents chains in May 1995, via UMD distribution (Now Seymour).

More recently Gay Times was redesigned and relaunched as GT magazine in February 2007 under the editorship of Joseph Galliano. The new Gay Times web site was launched in June 2007 at www.gaytimes.co.uk
